Meet Couple Married for 70 Years, who Died 15 Hours Apart

A couple who held hands at breakfast every morning even after 70 years of marriage have died 15 hours apart.

Helen Felumlee, of Nashport, died at 92 on April 12. Her husband, 91-year-old Kenneth Felumlee, died the next morning.

The couple's eight children say the two had been inseparable since meeting as teenagers, once sharing the bottom of a bunk bed on a ferry rather than sleeping one night apart, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported (http://ohne.ws/1in7erG).

They remained deeply in love until the very end, even eating breakfast together while holding hands, said their daughter, Linda Cody.

"We knew when one went, the other was going to go," she said.

According to Cody, about 12 hours after Helen died, Kenneth looked at his children and said, "Mom's dead." He quickly began to fade and was surrounded by 24 of his closest family members and friends when he died the next morning.

"He was ready," Cody said. "He just didn't want to leave her here by herself."

Son Dick Felumlee said his parents died of old age, surrounded by family.

"At Dad's bed we were singing his favorite hymns, reading scriptures and praying with him," he told The Associated Press in an email. "It was a going away party, and we know he loved it."

The pair had known each other for several years when they eloped in Newport, Ky., across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, on Feb. 20, 1944. At two days shy of his 21st birthday, Kenneth — who went by Kenny — was too young to marry in Ohio.

"He couldn't wait," son Jim Felumlee said.

Kenneth worked as a railroad car inspector and mechanic before becoming a mail carrier for the Nashport Post Office. He was active in his Nashport-Irville United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher.

Helen stayed at home, not only cooking and cleaning for her own family but also for other families in need in the area. She taught Sunday school, too, but was known more for her greeting card ministry, sending cards for birthdays, sympathy and the holidays to everyone in her community, each with a personal note inside.

"She kept Hallmark in business," daughter-in-law Debbie Felumlee joked.

When Kenneth retired in 1983 and the children began to leave the house, the Felumlees began to explore their love of travel, visiting almost all 50 states by bus.

"He didn't want to fly anywhere because you couldn't see anything as you were going," Jim Felumlee said.

Although both experienced declining health in recent years, Cody said, each tried to stay strong for the other.

"That's what kept them going," she said.

Nigeria needs competent leaders, says Soyinka

Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole
Soyinka, yesterday in Osogbo, declared that the country was in need of competent leaders to
confront, among others, the security challenges facing the country.

He said the security challenges facing the country could not be solved by prayers, but by leaders
with capacity to deal with the situation without partisanship.

Soyinka suggested that learning from the history of nations that had faced similar situations could help
Nigeria survive her present security challenges.

Soyinka, who was a keynote speaker at a colloquium with the theme Fundamental Imperatives of Cohabitation, Faith and Secularism,
organised by Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, CBCIU, Osogbo, called for a frank talk among stakeholders in the affairs of the country to end the spate of bombings.

According to Soyinka, who said he received with shock the news of Nyanya Motor Park bombing,
authorities concerned must arrest the situation.

Debunking a newspaper report, which quoted him as saying the nation’s security challenges could
be resolved through prayers, Soyinka posited that Boko Haram insurgency should not be mistaken
for a religious war, insisting that prayers alone could not end the crises.

He said: ”I have never said prayer can help resolve the security challenges facing Nigeria.

“I believe the situation must be tackled without partisanship and all these uninformed comments
cannot help the situation.

“We should wake up to the reality. Nigeria is in war and only competence can solve the problem,
not prayers.”

At the event, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State said the only way to respect God was by
showing respect to human beings, emphasising the need for people to accommodate others’ religions.

Fayose: Aggrieved PDP leaders give Jonathan ultimatum

Ayo Fayose

Some aggrieved leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State have given President Goodluck Jonathan a five-day
ultimatum to intervene in the crisis rocking the party over the emergence of former Governor Ayo
Fayose and Senator Gbenga Aluko as the governorship candidates of the party.

One of the leaders of the PDP in the state, Chief Feyisayo Fajuyi, who led other party leaders to a press conference in Ado Ekiti on Monday, called on the President to declare null and void the primary election which produced Fayose.

Fajuyi said that the process which led to the primary election of March 22 was fraught with irregularities saying based on this, the election should be annulled.

Other leaders who attended the press conference were: Chief Bankole Fayori (Irepodun/Ifelodun),
Oluwalana Ayobami (youth president), Chief Ajayi (Ise/Orun), Mrs. Foluke Adetunji (Ekiti West),
Mr. Akinola Adams (Ijero-Ekiti) and Biodun Ajibadeola (Ikole-Ekiti).
While calling on the national leadership of the party not to treat the issue with levity, Fajuyi said the group might “take a decision that could be unpalatable to the party.”
She said, “We want the President to intervene in this crisis. The primary election of March 22 was a fraud because the ward congresses which led to it were openly rigged.

Today makes it the 16th day of our waiting for a redress. While waiting,
some leaders have been persuaded to abandon the truth.

“We as a group jointly and individually dissociate ourselves from being part of moving on at the
loomong peril of failure at the governorship polls.

“The purported primaries itself was a daylight rape on democracy, and it was widely dismissed as unacceptable by the majority of the party’s stakeholders in Ekiti.”

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Police Command has warned politicians against raising false alarm as the state prepares for June 21 governorship election.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Uyanna, said this while briefing journalists in Ado Ekiti on Monday.
The CP said that raising false alarm was capable of undermining the peace being enjoyed in the
state.

Uyanna said that it was unfortunate that some politicians had been raising the alarm that they were attacked whereas nothing like that happened.

He also appealed to politicians to always end their campaign latest by 6:pm in order not o give
opportunity to some criminals who might want to hide in the dark to cause mayhem.

The police boss stated that the command had arrested some culprits who he said some arried out criminal acts saying those found culpable after the investigation would be charged to court.
